What if I don’t want take medications?
Many people choose not to take medications and still improve their mental health with active use and commitment to identifying their symptoms, using a combination of methods to regulate their moods, increase their distress tolerance, and improve relationships. For many, this is possible with the use of psychotherapy, mindfulness, lifestyle changes, behavioral modification, and distress tolerance skills, to name only a few.
Some cannot find the chemical and physiological balance through these methods alone, and they need to combine the use of medications in their life, to reduce risks of safety. Some people for whom medication may be continued long term are those managing bipolar and schizophrenia disorders. In such cases, the lowest dose of medication that is effective is the goal while still combining other forms of therapies to empower them to have better insight into their disorder, to recognize how they can reduce episodes, and how to monitor for changes.
